How to read an Australian label for halal

Three places to look before you buy: the certifier logo, the additive numbers, and the words 'flavour' and 'gelatine'.

Start with the logo. Halal certification in Australia is run by private organisations, each with its own trade mark, so learn the logos you trust.

Next, scan the additive numbers. Australian labels often drop the 'E', so carmine appears as 'colour (120)' and gelatine as 'gelatine' or '441'.

Finally, treat 'flavours' and 'emulsifier' as questions, not answers. If there is no logo, contact the maker and ask for the source.
