Welcome, and the additive hiding in your bread
Assalamu alaikum, and welcome to the first Halal Letter from Aizdihar Traders. Each issue brings one label lesson, one product check, and one useful tip to make halal shopping in Australia simpler.
This week's label lesson: E471
Look at the ingredients on most supermarket bread, margarine or ice cream and you'll find "emulsifier (471)". It's mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids, and those fats can come from plant oils or from animal fat, including pork. The label almost never says which. If a product you buy often lists 471, 472e or 481 and carries no halal logo, it's worth an email to the maker. More on E471.
Product check: two kinds of Haribo
Haribo says its standard gummies have traditionally used pork gelatine, while its halal range uses beef gelatine. They're different packs, so check for the halal logo before you buy. See all our lolly checks.
