Who certifies halal in Australia?
There is no single national halal authority. Here is how the system actually works.
Certifiers are private bodies. A producer submits ingredient and process details, passes a site inspection and signs an agreement for a set period.
For red meat exports, the Department of Agriculture keeps a list of Islamic organisations approved to certify. For products sold locally, there is no official government list.
A 2015 Senate inquiry recommended a single national certifier and trade mark. Those changes have not been made.
