Halal lollies at Coles and Woolworths

We checked the ingredient lists of popular lollies sold at Coles. Most gummies, jellies and marshmallows are set with gelatine, and the label rarely says where it comes from. Here's what we found and what to look for instead.

What to look for on a lolly label

  • Gelatine (441). Usually animal, often pork, unless the pack says halal beef, fish or certified gelatine. More on gelatine.
  • Carmine or carminic acid (120). Red colour from insects. Scholars differ. More on carmine.
  • Shellac (904). Insect-based glaze on shiny lollies. More on shellac.
  • Emulsifier (471) and glycerine (422). Can be plant or animal fat. More on 471.
  • Safe swaps: lollies set with pectin (440), agar (406) or starch, and anything carrying a halal certifier's logo, such as Haribo's halal range.

How we checked

Each entry links to the Coles listing we read on the date shown. We flag ingredients by the rules in our ingredient checklist. Recipes change, so a halal logo on the pack you're holding always wins. Paste any label into the checker to test it yourself.
