Gelatine: where it comes from and what to buy instead
Most gummies, marshmallows and some yoghurts use gelatine. The source decides everything.
Gelatine is made from animal skin and bones. Unless the label says beef, fish or halal, assume it could be pork.
Some brands make separate halal ranges. Haribo, for example, uses beef gelatine in its halal variants but pork gelatine in standard packs.
Alternatives include agar, pectin and starch-based gels, which show up in vegan lollies and jellies.
